Artist: Lauren Williams
Media: Ceramics, Clay, Stain
Gallery: Max L Gatov Gallery West
For this weeks art experience, I observed the art of Lauren Williams. Lauren is a undergrad student here at CSU Long Beach studding Ceramics even though she comes from a painting and drawing background. Her inspiration for studding art came from her family. As a child, her parents enjoyed art and music and influenced her to enjoy the same interest of them.
In Lauren’s art, she utilizes ceramics, clay and stain. The base of the art appears to have a rough surface due to the clay. The colors that are used are very flat and do not pop out. They are more neutral colors.
According to Lauren, her art has a religious vibe to it and it focuses on the sacrifice of Women. As seen on the artwork, there are crosses, nude women, and bones. The positioning of the women reminds me of a painting that you would find in an old church. The bones represent a sacrifice that was made.
I enjoyed this art because it reminded me of when I would go to church with my family when I was younger. This art had some sort of similarity to the artwork that was in the church. However I am unable to put my finger one what exactly the similarity is.
